Today Linda talks to Tess Michaels, founder of Stride Funding, and second-year student at Harvard Business School who joined the class of 2020 through HBS 2+2. She shares how she came up with the idea, how HBS has been instrumental in Strideââ¬â¢s success, and her path to HBS and 2+2. Tess Michaels discusses what its like being an HBS student with a Start-up [Show Notes] Our guest today, Tess Michaels, has done a ton. Iââ¬â¢m going to give you a few details, and then let her fill in her story herself as well as tell us about the new student financing start-up she has founded and is running. Tess graduated from Penn with a Bachelors in Applied Science and another Bachelors from the Wharton School in Global Impact Investing and Operations Management. She has a long list of activities and offices held while there, and in addition founded Soceana, a platform to ââ¬Å"democratize giving and promote corporate volunteerism,â⬠which was acquired in 2018. After graduation and being accepted to Harvardââ¬â¢s 2+2 program she worked at Goldman Sachs as an analyst for two years and then at Vista Equity Partners as a PE Associate. She joined HBS in 2018 and immediately founded Stride Funding, which we will learn more about later in this interview. Can you tell us a little about your background? Where you grew up? What do you like to do for fun? [2:31] I grew up in Texas and have a big love of BBQ. I love going to comedy shows, seeing live music and movies. One of my favorite films is Good Will Hunting, a Boston classic! Why did you decide to get two bachelors degrees at Penn? [3:12] Growing up I was really interested in science but also in business. At Penn I had the opportunity to study biology but also operations and investing at Wharton so I decided to take advantage of it. Why HBS 2+2? [4:01] My junior year at Penn I met with a couple upperclassmen who had applied and told me about the benefits. I knew I had gotten a lot out of the business classes at Wharton and wanted to take the opportunity to learn from a very global peer set as well as utilize the case method, which was very different from how I had been studying. 2+2 gave me the flexibility to pursue work that built upon my skill set before going to b- school with the comfort of knowing I was going to go to HBS. How would your initial post graduate years have been different if you hadnââ¬â¢t been accepted to 2+2? [4:54] I would most likely have gone into investment banking anyway. It is a great place to grow a skill set. Having 2+2 let me decide that while I loved finance, I missed the operations piece, and knew I could focus on that once I arrived, which was nice. Do you remember anything particularly challenging about your MBA application process? [5:50] With 2+2 you are applying early in your career, really without formal work experience, and you have to be thoughtful about who you choose to write letters of recommendation. Luckily, I had the benefit of growing my first start up while at Penn, so had people who could speak to my abilities in that regard. The second is crafting the right story. Thinking through your career path, why business school, and where it will take you. What do you like most about Harvard Business School? [7:00] Number one: the people are so inspiring. 40% of the class is international. Second is the experiences ââ¬â the international trips you take are led by fellow classmates from the countries you are visiting, which adds a whole new level of experience with a localââ¬â¢s perspective. Last, having the opportunity to grow Stride while in school has shaped my experience and made HBS similar to an accelerator learning from professors, entrepreneurs in residence, etc. What would you like to see improved? [8:12] The first-year experience is really valuable to build the community with the section ââ¬â you take every class with the same group of 90 students ââ¬â but a lot of classes overlapped with my undergrad experience. The other thing I would say is the lack of diversity in cases the types of protagonists donââ¬â¢t reflect the actual diversity in the workplace. With all the great experience you had both from your education and work, are you actually learning anything new from the classes? [9:10] There is not a day I regret going to HBS. The classes I am taking this year have been incredibly valuable, being taught by practitioners who have been incredibly successful in their careers. Classes are very different this year and specialized to what I need. The case method is also incredibly unique. You are learning from fellow peers who have collective experiences no individual could have themselves ââ¬â from the military, Tesla, big corporations with different missions and visions, and all are invaluable to my learning experience. Did you arrive at HBS knowing you wanted to start a business? [10:48] I did. I loved my time at Goldman, but missed operations. I knew that HBS would be a great launch pad to start something new. I spent a great deal of time thinking through problems I was very passionate about, real pain points. By the time I got to HBS I had been working on Stride for a few months. Tell me about Stride Funding What is it? How does it work? [11:39] The ideation process was very raw at first. I started by asking anyone and everyone, ââ¬Å"If you could solve any one problem, what would it be?â⬠There was a recurring theme ââ¬â the cost of education has just become so high, which has made the decision to go to grad school that much harder. When I was talking to HBS peers I heard that even more. I did field research and was ready to go with the right business model and the right problem when I arrived. Stride Funding is a student financing company. We offer a different kind of model based on income sharing. Traditional loans accrue interest while in school, and then you are paying a lot when you are making the least right out of school. During down times in your career (laid off, maternity leave, etc) you are paying hefty interest payments, so how do we align cost and value of education? Schools expect students to pay it all up front, and it is up to students to make sure the cost is worth it. What we have is an income share agreement ââ¬â we help grad students get funding and in return we take a fixed percentage of that studentââ¬â¢s income over five years. This allows more flexibility. You are paying the lowest amount when you are making the lowest amount, and if you are laid off you pay nothing. We do well if the student does well, so we have also built a community ââ¬â recruiters, resume services, and a peer-to-peer network. Funding is step one, but we are here for you throughout your career. We essentially are investors students are the start-ups and we nurture them, and we have the incentive to do so. From a cost perspective we are about the same price as a traditional loan but with none of the downside, and the upside of community built in with no additional costs. We want students to never worry about whether they can afford the education, and to know we are invested in them. How have the Harvard Incubator Lab and HBSââ¬â¢ other entrepreneurial resources played a role in the founding and success of Stride Funding? Getting funding? [17:45] I have been able to meet professors with incredible networks who have given me great guidance, and Iââ¬â¢ve been able to learn from their careers. Jeff Buskin is my advisor and introduced me to investors. Second is the ability to ideate with others who keep you accountable for what you say you will achieve. We have weekly meetings with entrepreneurs in residence, and having peers in similar boats is really amazing. The last thing is the ability to be on campus with the target segment, so it is really ââ¬Å"for students by students,â⬠seeing those pain points every day. Being in Boston is incredible with the number of students and schools. How do you manage the demands of b-school and running a business? [20:19] It is a lot. You sacrifice a lot of sleep. The primary things are my classes are really well aligned with the start up. They are completely relevant to Stride ââ¬â focused on selling, real value proposition, and brand value. Second is having an amazing team to work with. I could not have picked a better group. We are in constant communication, and I could depend on them for my life. We are having a retreat in Dallas in January. We keep each other accountable and energized about why we joined Stride in the first place. This is my number one priority, and I find ways to make it work. Plans for the future? How do you see yourself growing Stride Funding? Could it work for other funding needs? (mortgages for example ââ¬â lending for assets that appreciate?) [22:19] There are a lot of different growth sectors we think about. The student loan market is such a huge industry ââ¬â we hear about it in the news every single day. We already have our work cut out for us in fulfilling that demand. We probably will expand to undergrad later. Our second product is prepping to launch, which is a refinance option, and will be available in 2020. It is essentially converting all traditional loans into one income share agreement that is much more manageable. Beyond that we are looking at pain points in other areas. What would you have liked me to ask you? [24:57] Maybe what a good team looks like. So much of this business is built from the team, so I want to give a shout out to an incredible group of people. My partner in crime, Patrick Connor, has been in the lending space for 25 years and worked at companies like SoFi and the big banks. He makes sure underwriting is fair. We have an amazing group of students at Harvard College they bring so much energy and passion to the cause. Hiring the right people should first be mission-focused. People need to not just have great skills but understand the pain points and prioritize them. Our mission is, ââ¬Å"Fund your Future, Hit your Stride.â⬠It is about being there for every part of a studentââ¬â¢s journey, which is why community is so important. We aim to ensure students are able to really be successful and are their partner every step of the way. We anticipate the relationship continuing, building on things like the peer to peer network. Research Balfour Beatty plc Free Essay Example, 2000 words
(Wikipedia, 2006) Balfour Beatty acquired Mansell constructions in October 2002. Mansell had to overcome its fund deficit of 50 million and had shareholder funds of 20 million. The deal with Balfour Beatty gave a new lease of life to the company and it had acquired 42 million during the merger process. Mansell is now one of the subsidiaries of Balfour Beatty which focuses on sectors such as social housing, education, hospitals, defence and telecoms. It should be noted that 73 % turnover of the company comes from partnering contracts and 89 % were repeat businesses (taken from the companyââ¬â¢s website). So clearly, Mansell has focused on lower risk segments and has had utmost priority in retaining its client base and by and large, it has been quite successful. In 1998,a taskforce, led by Sir Egan came up with some proposals to improve the standards of the construction industry and expressed concerns over non-realization of full potential of the Industry. Some of the proposals the taskforce came up with were 1) Overall construction cost and time should be reduced by 10 % 2) Defects in the projects should be reduced by 20 %. 3) The industry should focus more on strategic partnerships and not continue competitive tendering for projects. 4) Safe working conditions must be provided to the employees. (Ralph Morton, 2002) Task 2 Major players in the UK construction industry Carillion plc: Strengths A company which has been in the market for long and has been a subsidiary organization of Tarmac industries plc, and which was separated from the group in the year 1999 has been achieving a huge turnover right from the year of its inception. (Sarah Peace, 2006) Weaknesses Carillion, like many other mojors, has compromised safety for profits. After the Hatfield crash, an accident which had totally changed the functioning of the rail industry in U. K, the media exposed a shocking report issued by a subsidiary of Carillion to relax the rules on defects on tracks. The report went this wayâ⬠¦. . We are currently being inundated with defects of this kind. ..however it is not practical or cost-effective to cut all of them out of the track immediately when some of them can afford to wait until they are re-testedââ¬â¢ Another incident which went in favor of the above mentioned argument was when an unmanned runaway went down a steep track killing 4 workers and injuring 3.This unfortunate incident raised serious apprehensions on the firmââ¬â¢s claims that safety of its employees is itââ¬â¢s first and foremost priority and everything else only seconded it.

Personal Experience on Self-Change - 947 Words
Individuals are products of their life experiences, with the ability to create and modify behavior; the ultimate goal of alteration of a behavior is improving some aspect of your life through analysis, and implementation of sequential procedures. For this project, I have chose to modify an increase in my daily water consumption, with the intention to enhance overall health and wellness. Water is an essential element for the survival of the human body. At least 20% of water necessary each day is consumed through the foods you eat, with direct consumption of water the most effective and beneficial method of rehydration. Each day, water is lost through the process of urination, respiration and perspiration, and in order for these bodily functions to occur water must be continually replaced through our daily diet. When water is not consumed individuals are at risk of dehydration, which can negatively impact the human body. These symptoms include thirst, headaches, dry-skin, fatigue, joi n and muscle pain. As a full-time university student, working part-time with social commitments throughout the day it is often difficult to intentionally reflect on how much water I have consumed, with in some instances not having access to a water bottle at all times. Marshall`s Court Essay Example For Students
Marshall`s Court Essay Hamilton was a federalist and served as the secretary of the treasury in the1890s. He was a strong supporter of a centralized federal government. He alsoadvocated loose interpretation of the u.s. constitution and the use of theelastic clause. Which was an ambiguous power of the federal government statingthat congress can do what it is proper and necessary john Marshallsepitomizing of these Hamiltonian principals and philosophies can be seen inseveral of his court rulings. Such as, McCulloch vs. Maryland, Dartmouth collegevs. Woodward, Gibbons vs. Ogden, and Cohens vs. Virginia. In the case McCullochvs. Maryland in 1819, Maryland brought a suit against McCulloch and bands himfor refusing to pay a tax on the federal bank. Marshall said, the power totax implies the power to destroy. Marshalls ruling sanctified the federalgovernments user of implied powers. His decision was in favor of the federalbank. It established the national supremacy over state governments. It alsopaved the way for vast expansion of federal power in the future. In the case ofDartmouth college vs. Woodward in 1919 as well, Dartmouth was telling its caseon how they had been chartered in 1769 as a private school to train missionariesand native Americans in new Hampshire. Republican members of the board oftrustees sought to have the state legislature convert the school into a newstate university. The state court supported contention that the state had theright to alter the schools charter. The courts ruling was in favor of therepublican board members. Daniel Webster appealed to the Supreme Court andMarshall overturned the state courts decision. This set the precedent for theGosceant contract. It also set a precedent for the supreme courts power tooverturn the state courts decisions. Which again had strengthened the centralgovernments. In 1824 the Cohens were arrested for selling lottery tickets inVirginia. They then appealed to the Supreme Court. Marshall ruled in favor ofthe state. Marshalls ruling strengthened the federal government byestablishing the power of the Supreme Court to review all state court decisions. The case of Gibbons vs. Ogden in 1824 dealt with Gibbons who wanted to run asteamboat company in New York and he sued Ogden. Ogden had the state givenmonopoly of the New York waterways. Article 1 of the constitution grants theregulation of interstate commerce to congress. New Yorks giving of a monopolyconflicted with the federal coasting act. That act required all vessels onnavigational, coastal an interstate waterways that you have a federal licensethere fore the monopoly was void. This ruling strengthened the federalgovernment with the power to regulate interstate commerce. It is easy to see onhow the Supreme Court with john Marshall epitomized Hamiltonian principles andphilosophies due to his rulings in court. If not for Marshalls rulings itcould be easy to say that our federal government would have fallen apart.

Price / Earnings Ratio and Housing Price Essay Example
Price / Earnings Ratio and Housing Price Essay What three alternative measures of the price-earnings ratio (P/E ratio) are described in this article? Answer: Following are three price-earnings ratio described in the article: 1. P/E ratio 2. ââ¬Å"Forwardâ⬠P/E ratio 3. ââ¬Å"Trailingâ⬠P/E ration Q2: (Advanced) Which of the three measures matches the definition of the P/E ratio given in your textbook? Explain your answer. Answer: Books has only discuss the simple P/E ratio, PE ratio measures how much investor willing to pay per dollar of current earnings, higher PEs are often taken to mean that firm has significant prospects for future growth.Price per Share PE Ratio = _____________________ Earnings per Share Generally similar firms have similar PE ratios, like technology companies may have similar PE ratio compare to utility, because technology more opportunity to fast growth with some risk where utility companies may be slow growth with very low risk. Q3: (Introductory) What weakness in the simple P/E ratio is overc ome by using the ââ¬Å"forwardâ⬠P/E ratio? What problems arise with the forward measurement? Answer: ââ¬Å"Forwardâ⬠P/E measure is the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) using forecasted earnings for next 12 month or giving period of time.Simple P/E give only current ratio for current earning where forward P/E give near future earnings. Where high forward P/E mean that company investors are willing to more because they expect earnings to grow. The problem with ââ¬Å"forwardâ⬠P/E is it is based on analysis earning forecast, as Mr. Mortimer said You can make the forward P/E anything you want [by boosting the forecast],. Q4: (Advanced) What weakness in the simple P/E ratio is overcome by using the trailing four quarters in the measurement?Specifically identify how this measure differs from the simple P/E ratio first described in the article. Answer: ââ¬Å"Trailingâ⬠P/E is calculated based on last four quarter actual earnings (after adjustment of unusual gain or c harges etc. interest, law suit). Trailing P/E give more realistic company picture. Where simple P/E ratio calculates the based on current share price and last 12 months earning (with adjustment). Q5: (Advanced) The author states that users should make adjustments for unusual items in the ââ¬Å"trailingâ⬠P/E measure. Why do you think that is his recommendation? Answer: To get realistic earning, because company may have bad quarter where earning may drop due to law suit or any incident, and it could to boost due to unusual profit due to high demand of specific company product. Example: Sandy hurricane which made generator demand so high which could not happen next 100 years. Q6: (Advanced) ââ¬Å"Low P/E stocks outperform high P/E stocksâ⬠, say jess Mortimerâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Explain the arguments for this assertion by the investment strategy director at BNY Mellon wealth Management.Answer:As per Mortimer low P/E stocks are outperform and give surprise results, where Mr. Mellon argument is, it does but as group with over the period of time not in the short term. Q3: The article implies that tight lending standards have contributed to rising housing prices? What is rationale behind this claim? What argument could you make that tight lending standards are helping to keep housing prices from rising?Answer: Before 2008 economic recession many family invested the money in housing market and bought two houses or some people moved to home with 0% down payment, interest only loan and even Bank issues the loan without proper verification of Job stability. People are scare that if they sale current house they may not going to get loan due to more verification and financial health of the loaner. This issue letting people to stay in same home instance of upgrade them self and impacting market inventory to low since build already not building more houses and driving home price higher.Q4: What factors are pushing up the demand for housing? Sacco And Vanzetti Essays - Anti-communism In The United States
Sacco And Vanzetti Essays - Anti-communism In The United States Sacco And Vanzetti The case of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti was not about the justice system blaming them for murdering two people, but rather how the justice system murdered two people and got away with it. Throughout the trial the public withdrew from their anti-radical thinking to more of a sympathetic understanding of another human being, no matter their beliefs. World-wide interest was quickly turned to the ill-fated Sacco and Vanzetti. While the judge and prosecution had already delivered the verdict in their minds, Sacco and Vanzetti proclaimed and defended their innocence even till the very end. Before the crime ever took place Sacco worked at the Milford Shoe Factory as an edge trimmer. Sacco was a hard worker; who supported his wife, Rosa, and his son, Dante. Vanzetti worked as a fish peddler. In May 1917, both left their jos to go to Mexico and avoid the draft. Both Sacco and Vanzetti had the same views which were considered radical at the time; therefore they did not advertise them. Understandably, they feared for their safety as well as their friends and families who shared the same ideals (Feuerlicht 11). Although some had suspected that they were of radical ideology, it was not publicaly announced. Having avoided the draft, Sacco and Vanzetti returned from Mexico. Upon their return, organizations and federal agents started to investigate. On April 15, 1920 there was a payroll robbery of the Slater & Morrill Shoe Company. Two men were killed and $15,773. 59 missing. These crimes happened in South Braintree Massachusetts and became known as the Braintree Crimes. There were two people that attacked and killed the payroll employees, then grabbed the money and took off in the escape car. The escape car was described as a black Buick with other partners inside. Eyewitnesses claimed that two of the criminals looked Italian (Altman 70). Crimes like this had been common at the time and had only sparked local interest (DAttilio). It was not until Sacco and Vanzetti were in the courtroom facing charges of murder and robbery, that the Braintree Crimes would become a publicized affair. Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested on May 5, 1920 for the murders and robberies that took place three weeks earlier. They both were anarchistic, atheist, draft dodgers, immigrants, and neither could speak English well (Fabulous 26). This undoubtedly made them an easy target. When questioned they both lied creating a consciousness of guilt in the eyes of the prosecutors and judge (DAttilio). Another aspect that did not help Sacco and Vanzetti were their alibis. Although both had an alibi, their witnesses often could not remember much about the day in question other than they defiantly saw the defendants. Saccos alibi rested on his repeated attempt to get passports to Italy to see his family. Vanzetti was allegedly selling fish and visiting some friends (Montgomery 142-155, 131-141). Percy Katzmann, the prosecutor, had given both a difficult time with the questioning. He used their lack of English skills against them and often twisted their words around. Although Moore, the defendants lawyer would object to this, Judge Thayer would allow it to continue and often encourage it. Judge Thayer was unprofessional by making rude comments during and out of court. He would refer to Sacco and Vanzetti as Dagoes never referring to them as Italians (Feuerlight 202). He would also talk about the case outside of court and brag to others saying Did you see what I did with those anarchistic bastards the other day? I guess that will hold them for a while. (Feuerlight 306). Not only was his behavior questionable, but the fact that he was the judge of the case was questionable, since he had just sentenced Vanzetti for another case a few weeks prior. Fortunately for Sacco and Vanzetti, their lawyer was dedicated and fought for their freedom. Moore raised awareness to the trial worldwide. Supporters protested for Sacco and Vanzettis freedom. After six weeks of trial Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty of murder and robbery. Though they were found guilty, their lawyer still fought for appeals and continued to spend money on propaganda. Since the anarchist movement had been paying for the trial and all the spending that Moore was doing, they fired him. Moore was replaced in 1924 by William Thompson (DAttillio). Evaluation - The Secret Garden Party Organisation Essay
Evaluation - The Secret Garden Party Organisation - Essay Example The report will also discuss the various options for the two strategic issues. Finally, the paper will concentrate on in-depth analysis of the annual music event. Section 1: Key Strategic Issues The management of Secret Garden Party Organization is grappling with several key issues, which will dictate its performance in the industry. One key strategy is the need to target internet viewers to its program. Such a move is justified by the fact that the literacy rate in UK is above 95% besides having high rate of internet users. The other critical issue that the organization is grappling with is the issue of bad weather. It is worth noting that the organization should consider conducting indoor events to avoid chances of bad weather ruining the event. The other two strategic issues that are of concern to the Secret Garden Party include the pricing of the tickets and the measures to ensure that this annual event does not clash with any other event. However, the two main issues, which will be put into perspective, include the pricing of the tickets and the measures to ensure that this annual event does not clash with any other event. In order to make sure that the annual event registers maximum attendance, it is prudent that the date in which the event is staged does not clash with any other major event. ... The event is always very memorable judging by how lovers of the festival always look forward to the event (Cronk & Hill, 2008). The other justification of setting a unique date is for the logistics reasons; planning such a global event is no mean fete, and it gets more difficult if several other programs are being organized around the same date. A program of that caliber requires security measures, humanitarian measures, and proper sanitation for the guests. All these requirements are always attained on this event thanks to the fact that it is set on a unique date. The other key strategic issue is the issue of pricing. Research by the event organizers revealed that majority of the lovers of this annual event are reluctant to attend the event owing to the fact that the ticket prices are beyond their reach. The event organizers must be alive to the fact that lowering the ticket prices will go a long way to increase the number of attendance to the event considerably. Indeed, it is bette r to reduce prices, which will increase the number of attendance thereby maximizing the revenues for the event (Kinnie, 2003). Reducing the prices will not affect the surplus at the event because the corporate sponsors associated with the event always shoulder most of the costs incurred at the event. Section 2 Several ways can be used to attain the strategic issues discussed in section 1 above. The issue of pricing is very critical to the financial viability of the annual event. The organizers of this event need to explore various options available to them regarding the issue of pricing of the tickets. Currently, the ticket prices are very high; this factor is blocking out potential lovers of the events from attending this otherwise popular event (Kuchler, 2013). One
